Workplace Wednesdays

Welcome back to Workplace Wednesdays!

In the workplace – there is a form of GBV that is a “cancer” that can destroy work relationships and cause an atmosphere of fear and discomfort at the highest level – and it is called – sexual harassment.

In the workplace, there must be no tolerance or acceptance in any way of any form of this behaviour, as it is insidious and creates an atmosphere in the workplace that is totally unproductive and destructive at many levels.

Sexual harassment can be ANY form of unwanted conduct of a sexual nature which causes employees to feel that their workplace has become hostile and threatening towards them. It can be any unwelcome/unwanted behaviour from a fellow worker or usually a person of more senior rank and includes, physical contact that is unwanted or of a sexual nature, and can even include non-physical behaviour such as words, sounds, gestures, facial expressions, suggestions, in any form, and such like.

No-one in a workplace must tolerate or be expected to suffer such behaviour and every employee has the right to raise a complaint about sexual harassment to top management. This complaint should involve facts and feelings and should be grounded in evidence as well as emotion. All employers are to take such complaints very seriously or they run the risk of such a complaint being escalated to a legal forum where the matter can be heard.

It is incumbent on the employer to establish a workplace that is safe and respectful to all employees where everyone is treated with dignity (male and female alike) and all employers should deal very harshly with alleged offenders in the most serious of ways. This is designed to stop such behaviour throughout the organisation.
